Suspects arrested for killing rare wild birds
01.19.06 (10:19 pm)   [edit]
Suspects arrested for killing rare wild birds Two men suspected of poisoning hundreds of rare species of wild birds in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province, were arrested on Wednesday, the local public security bureau revealed yesterday. A group of five local residents scattered poisoned grains in Yancheng National Rare Birds Nature Reserve several times last month, intending to lure and kill wild ducks and sell their downs for money, according to Zhang Kai, a police officer who investigated the case. Two suspects were caught when they came back days later to pick up the bodies of these ducks. More than 200 such ducks were poisoned and killed and at the same time some rare species of wild birds that cohabitate with the ducks also died after eating the grains. About 400 wild birds were reported to have died including three red-crowned cranes and dozens of white and black storks, said Zhang, from the Sheyang branch of Yancheng Municipal Public Security Bureau in north Jiangsu. All the poisoned grains scattered by the gang have been cleared away from the reserve, but 10 people have also now been assigned to guard the contaminated area to prevent birds from landing down and taking food. "We will do all we can to guarantee no birds are poisoned again in the future," said Zhang. According to Zhang, his bureau will turn over the two men arrested to the local procuratorate bureau next week. Several cases of poisoning and killing endangered species of wild animals have been reported in both Yancheng and other nature reserves in recent years. Lu Shicheng, an expert in wild birds protection, told China Daily: "Severe punishment should be imposed on people who do this. Killing three birds with a protected level such as red-crowned cranes will lead to sentences of more than 10 years in prison, in accordance with the country's current wild animal protection law, if they are convicted." According to Lu, as a fundamental way to ensure the welfare of the wild birds, Yancheng nature reserve should further enhance their protection work and promote people's awareness in wild animal protection. Out of the 400,000-hectare Yancheng natural reserve, only the 19,000-hectare core area has been under full-time close supervision, according to Deng Jingdong, vice- director of the site. It was set up in 1984 and provides shelter to more than 3 million wild birds every year, including 14 species of the country's most highly protected birds and 76 species of second-level protected birds. The nature reserve is the only place in the country for almost all the 1,500 migrant red-crowned cranes in the world to spend their winter, Deng added. China's cinema scores over $250 mln in 2005

China's cinema scores over $250 mln in 2005

Chinese cinema made more than two billion yuan (around 250 million US dollars) in 2005, according to a report on China's Culture Industry by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences released here Wednesday.

Domestic films made up 60 percent of the total, once again surpassing the imported ones.

With the more active participation of the private sector and overseas, Chinese cinema has seen a boom. In the meantime, market demand for both home-made and imported films have both increased.

The report noted that such important events as the centennial of Chinese cinema last year and the 60th victory anniversary of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression provided fresh material and good opportunities for domestic films.Annual production, total investment in, and market share of domestic films all hit a record high last year. Domestic films notonly scored high in the box office at home, but also had a surprising profit from external trade.

In addition to a surge of revenue in the film sector, film has become a daily consumption and a major topic for common Chinese, the report said.

Sina.com awards 2005's efforts

The saturated awards season has begun with the coming of New Year. And famous online portal Sina.com has also joined in to award their best of the year. Celebrities from media, business and, of course, the entertainment industry attended the grand ceremony held last night in Beijing.

Organized by Sina.com, the "Internet Grand Award" is closely related to the internet and the cyber media. Not only are the award winners largely decided by netizens' votes; but also many of the awards are internet exclusive.

PK, Blog and Shenzhou Six are the catchwords online in 2005. Mobile phone Xiaoqiang, a cute five-year-old boy has become the man of the year in Colour Ringtone.

And talented actress/director Xu Jinglei has won the Blogger of the Year Award. She says winning this award is a bonus to her.

"I spent almost the whole year preparing my new movie and wanted to shot it at the end of last year. But finally the plan was delayed due to some reasons. So I started writing blog on sina.com, which has proved to be very popular. I'm a bit surprised and of course very happy about that."

We saw some fresh faces on the latest Internet Awards, but most belong to those who appear in almost all music awards, like the Super Girl winners. Li Yuchun and Zhang Liangying were both awarded the Most Popular New Idol Award.
Zhang Liangying appeared humble after winning this award.

"Super Girl Competition makes me become famous almost suddenly. I feel I'm very lucky as there might be many other talented young people who are still unknown. So for me, I will work even harder to return people's support."

If there is anyone who can get more screams and cheers from audiences on the red carpet and in the ceremony than these hot super girls, it must be Hong Kong singing king Andy Lau.

After being in showbiz for more than 20 years, the veteran singer and actor was still crowned with two important titles, Actor of the Year and Male Singer of the Year and was the biggest winner last night. The legend of everlasting popularity continues, but Andy seems to want more.

"I always believe you reap what you sow. I value internet, the new media very much and I think it really has great potential. And I hope I can come back next year and the year after that and win more awards."

Other winners of the ceremony include hot girl duo Twins, Hong Kong Diva Joey Yung and actress Zhou Xun.

Harbin to examine pollution impact

Harbin to examine pollution impact

www.chinaview.cn

BEIJING, Dec. 13 -- After more than three weeks of suffering due to a chemical slick, the levels of toxicity in the stretch of the Songhua River in Harbin, capital of Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, have returned to normal.

Local officials have now pledged to focus on restoring day-to-day life, and examine the long-term impact of the accident.

"It is now time to switch our attention from emergency prevention to appraisal work of the impact of the slick on the ecology of the Songhua River, and also speed up our attempts to resume normal business and social order," said Zhang Zuoji, governor of Heilongjiang Province.

The toxic slick was caused by a chemical plant blast on November 13 in Jilin City, Jilin Province, which led to more than 100 tons of chemicals, mainly benzene and nitrobenzene, entering the adjacent Songhua River.

The toxic slick forced Harbin, with an urban population of 3.8 million and Dalianhe, where 26,000 out of the 36,000 residents rely on river water as their drinking water source, to cut their water supply for several days.

By 8 am yesterday, the concentration of benzene and nitrobenzene at all water checking stations within the precinct of Harbin remained under the national standard, which means the toxic slick has passed through, sources with the Heilongjiang Provincial Environment Protection Bureau said.

And yesterday, Dalianhe, which cut its water inlet from the river on November 30, resumed water supply both for industrial and civilian use, although the local government advised residents not to drink it before receiving the go-ahead from the local health bureau.

By noontime yesterday, the front of the contaminated water arrived at Suibin County, Jiamusi, the second major city in Heilongjiang to be affected.

Residents' life has not been affected as they mainly rely on underground water sources.

No poisonous pollutants were detected in the drinking water in Jiamusi, which has an overall population of more than two million, according to Jiamusi Environment Protection Bureau.

There are still some 200 kilometres before the slick reaches Tongjiang, where the Songhua River joins the Heilong River, the border river between China and Russia.

NANJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu province, launched on Monday an English website to advocate world peace and reveal Japanese wartime atrocities in 1937.

"December 13 will be the 68th anniversary of Nanjing Massacre. We launch this website to make more people around the world know about the Japanese wartime crime," said Zhu Chengshan, curator of the Nanjing Museum Commemorating Victims of the Nanjing Massacre.

Japanese troops occupied Nanjing on Dec. 13, 1937, and launched a six-week long massacre. Historical records show that more than 300,000 Chinese people, not only disarmed soldiers but also civilians, were slain in the holocaust.

"The website english.nj1937.org will post the latest research findings and more than 300 pictures and video about the massacre," said Zhu.

The website's Chinese version, www.nj1937.org, was launched in December 2004. It has registered a total of 300,000 visitors since its inauguration.
